Product Spotlight: calmd Face Mask

While this may seem like shameless self-promotion on my behalf (and it is!) due to launching this business last week, the mask works!

What is it?

The calmd Face Mask is a hot/cold therapy device that helps with headaches. However, it can be used for some much more.

What is in it?

The calmd Face Mask is filled with wonderful orbs of relaxation known as aqua peas. For all those playing at home wondering what they are made of, they are 65% water, 30% glycerol and 5% sodium polyacrylate. The aqua peas are encased in plastic and lined on one side with a luxurious plush cover.

What is it used for?

I have copied and pasted below a few common types of headaches from the calmd blog. See below- What is a headache?

-----

“Headache is defined as a continuous pain in the head.

However there are many different types of headaches that range from a minor inconvenience to a medical emergency - if you are experiencing severe pain, please consult a healthcare professional.

We have chosen five of the most common types of headaches, that our Face Mask can help with:

Migraine

A migraine is characterised by severe throbbing pain, usually localised to one side of the head. This can be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, light sensitivity, sound sensitivity, cold hands and aura (visual disturbances that might include numbness of the arms or legs).

Directions: Place mask over the site of headache, as pain regions can vary depending on the type of migraine. Suggestions may include; applying the mask over the eyes or over the back of the head with band around forehead. Heat or Cold Therapy may be used depending on personal preference - please use the product safely, and read all instructions before use.

Sinus

Sinus headaches can be caused by congestion, irritation or inflammation of the sinuses in the head.

Directions: Apply the mask to the face, over the frontal sinus. The mask has been thoughtfully designed to cover the sinus and eyes for additional relaxation and pain relief. Heat Therapy is recommended - please use the product safely and read instructions before use. Attempt to blow nose following application.

Hangover

A large number of adults have over-indulged at least once in their lifetime on alcohol. This can lead to waking up the next morning with a splitting headache. Symptoms can often mimic migraine type headaches, without being limited to one side of the head.

Directions: Apply the mask to the face, over the forehead and eyes. Cold Therapy is recommended, or using the mask at room temperature - please use the product safely, and read all instructions before use. An added benefit is that it may also help with puffy eyes, and dark circles caused by the late night antics!

Fever

Headache caused by fever is often caused by an underlying bacterial or viral infection - medical advice should be sought. Fever type headaches can be general in nature with pain largely dependent on the underlying cause.

Directions: Apply the mask to the face - this could be over the forehead, or over the eyes. Cold Therapy is recommended - please use the product safely, and read all instructions before use.

Eyestrain

Pain and heaviness may be felt around the eyes. This can occur to spending increased amounts of time in front of a screen or uncorrected visual problems.

Directions: Apply the mask to the face, over eyes; both Heat and Cold Therapy is recommended and will depend on personal preference - please use the product safely, and read all instructions before use.”

In Summary

The calmd Face Mask is useful for so many other purposes. The reason calmd exists is to relax both body and mind. (Click here to see a short blog on the interaction of body and mind.)

The calmd Face Mask can be used simply to relax and unwind after a long day. Place the mask over the eyes and focus on breathing to re-centre your body and mind. Assisting with stress and returning the body to a restful state.

We have found in brief anecdotal accounts that the calmd Face Mask can help during bouts of anxiety. This however, is in conjunction with existing strategies. If you are struggling with anxiety or mental health please seek professional help. Just as you would if you hurt your back and came in to see us in the clinics!

Physio Matt Ho has been using the mask to cool and sooth the face after mixed martial arts training as well as Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He also feels it can be useful for focus pre fight / competition.

For the beauty conscious, the calmd Face Mask can be used to reduce bags under the eyes that may occur from accumulation of birthdays, late nights and allergies. Also helpful following minor cosmetic procedures such as botox and filler injections.

We have had a few patients / proud calmd Face Mask owners report relief in TMJ (jaw) pain when work on the side of the face.

The uses are endless! The calmd Face Mask can be purchased from all PhysioLife sites from Monday 5th of August and from Heidelberg today. Alternatively, if you don’t like to go out. They can be purchased from the calmd website: www.calmd.co while we are here, give @calmd.co a follow on instagram!
